We finish our unit on space this week. What is a star? What is a galaxy? What are constellations and how do we use them? What is a lunar eclipse? These are questions we address this week.

The children look at pictures of constellations and will create their own constellation viewers. We will act out a lunar eclipse (orange, blue and gray t-shirts) for the sun, earth and moon, with the earth's orbit blocking the sun's light from the moon. We will also make lunar eclipse cookies for our snack!

For a close family getaway, the George Observatory in Brazos Bend State Park has Saturday night star viewing that's great fun. It is located about 1.5 hours from The Woodlands, south of downtown Houston.

Books we read: The Book of Stars (Clint Twist); Stargazers (Gail Gibbons).
