Pond Life

I know last week's post said we would be looking at reptiles this week. HOWEVER, we came upon a tadpole population that was too good to pass by, so we will be studying pond life instead!

When we first look at a pond, it seems so peaceful and quiet, but a whirlwind of activity is taking place; ponds are teeming with life!

Our class has a "freshwater pond" full of tadpoles, turtles, crawfish, minnows and a water plant. We discuss the freshwater ecosystem here in the Woodlands. The kids will use nets to carefully scoop up some of our critters and observe more closely. They will recreate the life cycle of a frog on paper, and we make and eat a sweet "pond" snack. We will play the "Heron Frog Hunt" game, leap frog, and sing the speckled frog song. If you get a chance, visit a local pond this week and ask your children to tell you about it!

Books we read: Around the Pond (Ann Cooper); One Small Square--Pond (Donald Silver)

Next Week: Mammal Bablies (Mother's Day Theme) [Reptiles will be in two weeks :)]
