What is Sound?

Sound--What is it? How is it created? We ask these questions this week as we explore how our bodies hear sound. Understanding terms like sound waves, vibration, pitch and frequency help us perform activities in class to demonstrate how sound travels. Water glasses, balloons, rubber bands and musical instruments are just some of the tools we use. We discuss how sound travels and how the design of our ears works to catch sound. The children will make and take home cup and string "telephones" to demonstrate how sound travels through vibration. They will also create sound wave pictures using oil pastel crayons. Ask your child if there is sound on the moon. Why or why not? Books we Read: Hearing, (Rebecca Olien); Hearing, (Kay Woodward); The Bremen town Musicians, (retold by Jack Reese)
