What is a Scientist?

Welcome to Science Fun!   We start our year of Science Fun asking the question:  What is a Scientist?  The children will learn that Scientists ask questions, make guesses as to the answers (hypotheses), collect information, conduct experiments (try different things and see what happens), record their data and determine the results to see if their guesses are correct.

We explain that Scientists have special clothing to help keep them safe while they experiment (lab coats, safety goggles, protective gloves) and discuss some basic tools Scientists use to help them find answers (magnifying glasses, test tubes, weighing and measuring devices such as scales, rulers, beakers, and notepads and pencils to record data).   They will wear "lab coats" and goggles throughout the year as we explore God's creation through science.  We will have a "magnifying glass" snack using mini bagels, pretzel sticks, and grape jelly. This should certainly "magnify" our fun!

Books we read:   What is a Scientist?, by Barbara Lehn

NOTE:  We will need styrofoam egg cartons in a few weeks for a special project, so please send them in if you have any.  Thanks!
